But there are far more powerful images of her not like this, so we couldn't use it.

These caged boulders, gave a really good effect of her image.

We discussed that the greyscale doesn't work, however the darkness and high contrast does work. It portrays her mysterious side well i think.
POP VIDEO 2009/2010:
A2 COURSE As a group we were to develop a concept, image and brand for a new solo artist, group or band and develop and produce their first pop video, their first DVD cover and their first magazine advertisement. In order to establish the groups image and brand, for a particular target audience.
The five stages of production for a pop video
1. Research and development
2. Pre production
3. Production
4. Post production
5. Distribution and exhibition
Research and development:

After forming a group of five we were told we could have no more than four in a group. So Greg and I split off into a group of two and began working on choosing the track and artist, quickly as we were behind.
We had an idea of a catchy older retro tune which would be quite memorable. We researched 90’s American rap, such as Will Smith and The Sugar hill gang, we ended up choosing ‘
Jump on it’ by Sugar Hill gang. We had a concept of portraying a parody of Cowboys and Indians, and the spoof of girl’s choreographed dances. However, having simple lyrics and it being very repetitive it would not work, and if we did use it, it would work only for the first 30 seconds. And with this generation of viewers having an increasing declining, short attention span, this would be bad marketing tool and not generate good sales. So, we then tried to focus on the idea of parody; creating the band as a fun loving and care free “goons” approach,

we had the idea of a
Good the Bad and the Ugly spin on the video. For example, the band members would be riding down the streets on a apparent horse, then the camera would track away to reveal they are ‘riding’ chairs and the studio to come into shot, with girls creating horse sounds with coconuts. Yet, this again would become too repetitive.
Therefore, this was an apparent mistake, as we were blocked by the simple words and catchy tune, and two weeks later after vigorous research and brainstorming we scrapped the idea, we decided that a novelty tune such as Jump on it would be far too difficult to enrapture an audience, and would generate too fewer sales.
We then went to the other end of the spectrum and chose, a little late, a Damien Rice song ‘Amie’. It has no video, which is a great advantage to us for the later stages of productions, as it could generate more views on YouTube and become popular, therefore giving us more feedback and more of an advantage of marketing.
The song has a sense of narrative and strong imagery; a relaxed and meaningful story behind it. Greg and I both saw the singer to be a young, casual individual looking male with a sense of originality and creativity. In the video there will also be a girl; a different pretty looking red head girl.
The Lyrics…
Nothing unusual nothing strange
Close to nothing at all
The same old scenario the same old rain
and there's no explosions here
Then something unusual something strange
comes from nothing at all
I saw a spaceship fly by your window
did you see it disappear?
Amie come sit on my wall
and read me the story of O
Tell it like you still believe that the end of the century brings a change for you and me
Nothing unusual nothing's changed
Just a little older that's all
You know when you've found it there's something I've learned
Cause you feel it when they take it away hey hey
Then something unusual something strange
comes from nothing at all
But I'm not a miracle and you're not a saint
just another soldier on a road to nowhere
Amie come sit on my wall and read me the story of O
tell it like you still believe that the end of the century
brings a change for you and me
Amie come sit on my wall and read me the story of O
Tell it like you still believe that the end of the century
brings a change for you and me

The suggestion of childish/cartoon like drawings would set the narrative, with the narrative being interrupted by the performance aspect of the singer in a place, like a coffee shop, or a personal space to the singer drawing and singing the lyrics. Being an acoustic, faraway style song, the idea of doodles around the pictures and even taking over the performance would come into it.
We like the idea that this artist is aiming for the A, B and even C jictar scale. ; ‘Love’ is a universal feeling and can relate to everyone (there are 3419 songs with love in the title), however the lyrics are quite poetical and mature therefore we would market the singer to A and B.
I see him as a very talented musician playing several instruments, also implying that he is from an A to B class. He has been spotted from an Indie record company and has now has been taken on by EMI. We have not yet decided on name.
“The quiet one, the intense one, the singer-songwriter most revered by the other quiet and intense ones”
To make him more sellable as a bard, I thought of giving him a back story of something like he travelled the world as he was annoyed or disheartened by where he lived, then claiming he had a new perception on life and his way of living. “It was this freedom, which was beautiful and really interesting, and really hard at the time.” not quite as naff but an idea of making him deeper than the usual acoustic style soloists. His main similarity or inspiration would be the likes of David Gray and Coldplay. His main competitor would be the likes of Jason Maraz, being the same genre and a little younger in age; but we would then market him to be much more truthful rather than Jason who is moré cheeky.
Thus, finally pronouncing our idea, or gaining some sort of concept, we need to quickly, logistically and efficiently allocate our roles and schedule our production. We are scouting the school for potential characters to fit our soloist and to lip sync. We shall finalise our idea, and then draw out a storyboard, once done we can explore some special effects, staging and locations crew and design.
Pre Production:
“In this business. The first rule is, never act out of desperation, because there is always someone out there looking to sucker you”
-Kevin Czinger, Volcano entertainment Founder
A cynical quote but I want to work correctly. We started late but that is no excuse. We got the green light, so we needed to secure a successful project. Working with our strengths, we will designate roles, Greg being artistic and mine being organisation, we can allocate roles by our strengths.
Knowing that we need a young original, attractive male to appeal to the A to B class, females finding him attractive and for males to find him motivating, we are scouting our school, which is plentiful with young males and being a theatrical school it is also useful to have good actors. We will search the school data base to make it easier and look at pictures as well as scouting. We will also ask tutors and teachers for recommendations.
For the central character of the video, Amie, we want her to be a red headed girl; red heads we feel have so much more of a beauty about them, unconventional almost. I also think it will add to the originality of the soloist.
We will also, perfect the star image of our artist which will help us determine the possible locations for the video. We feel as he has now become a major, the major will want to really push the idea of his organic quality and personality.
We are breaking apart the lyrics and sorting out the timeline; this will illustrate the song and help us to visually aid the action and structure. The storyboard will be full of the technical direction of the drawings and the performance. Some special effects we are looking at is animation and transitions from paper to reality to performance, both Greg and I have delved into animation but at smaller levels therefore we need to efficiently know what we have to do, have a well thought-out idea, to avoid complications, which as I know from my AS coursework is vital, as it makes it so much harder than it should be. Also from research I feel that lighting is very important, the most successful videos are the ones that use lighting efficiently.
Lists will be sorted once we have finalised our needs. A well orgainsed folder will be kept. Including…

* Research
* Development
* Polaroid’s of potential actors
* Story boards
* Digital story boards
* Floor plans
* Lighting plans
* Shooting schedule
* Equipment lists
* Costume Props lists
* Cast lists
We will stay in contact with our actors to make sure they feel aware of what is happening and not to feel up tight. We will update hem with scheduals, contracts and the post production will also be sorted out previously. The creation of his image and star persona will help us produce his cover and marketing campaign.
Production:
"You’ve gotta be savvy really, or else you get the piss taken out of you”
- Melanie B, Spice girls
We want to make sure that our final video will look professional, therefore to get our “artist” to lip sync well. Therefore to find an actor as soon as possible so that he can learn the lines off by heart and back to front. So we can film efficiently.
A few days before hand we will call the performers and crew a few days before the actual shoot and clarify what will happen, and if there are any problems to sort or compromise them out.
On the day of the shoot, we will have hopefully got a really well thought out storyboard and schedule and stuck to it, therefore if there is any extra potential footage we can film, we can do so.
We will also have a camera that day, for potential advertisement action shots for DVD or CD cover and our production shots.
There only being two of us we will really have to be very organised.
Post Production:
Using our class time, spare time any time we have free we will then edit our footage using final cut pro and most likely after effects for the animation.
Hopefully our story board will be well thought out therefore it will be easy for us to stick to it. However, I found from last year that seeing your footage on screen and seeing the countless amounts of effects free at your disposal, you can see better ways of editing that look more effective. Therefore we may find we go off track however we can also be more creative to find a better way of marketing our artist.
Again, being only two of us in the group, it will be easier to compromise if there are any problems yet there will be a lack of more creative ideas, therefore we will have to keep our story board or broaden our minds.
I think to make sure we progress well; we could keep showing other members of the media course to look at our progress and give an opinion on the overall effect, and improve if needs be. Once we have finished our video or in the progress of editing we can real on the campaign for our artist, by creating his DVD/CD cover. The ideas we have come up with our emphasising the creative side and doodles commutating his free will and thoughtfulness. So drawings or the cliché type of greyscale effect.
Distribution and Exhibition:
Being a new major company artist his options will be far more open to a broader scale, such as internet subscription or marketing sites.
To promote his image, we would theoretically as publicists give him a slot on a show like Jonathan Ross, as the viewers ages are 16 to 26 the main age range which he would appeal to. Magazines such as NME or maybe more newspapers such as the Observer would give him an interview, as we are appealing to the A to B category.
As his music is quite atmospheric, pathetic phalacy cinematic etc etc, his music would then be used as a soundtrack to big films of the time, for example if it were this summer, 500 Days [of Summer], or television shows mostly American as they have a bigger audience then go globally,

so for example “Grey’s Anatomy” or such.
To promote his consideration to the world, we would then promote him to be original organic and truthful.
"In the music business bigger is not necessarily better. In fact I believe smaller is actually better”
- Chuck Kaye, Dreamworks, SBKPublishing
Institutional an audience context:

…. Has been performing since the early 2000’s, he has only released his debut album once achieving commercial success. Having travelled the world, his music and style has become more established. He claimed that his passion for music and life caused him to move back to his home town in Manchester, Moss Side. Creativity oozes from him, playing in total of 6 instruments, guitar, drums, cello, violin, piano and ukulele therefore his fans will admire him some find him attractive and others find him exciting. This TV bard used to focus upon the material aspects of life however once exploring the world and “himself” his lyrics and genuineness has fluctuated, and music has, from rock Indie become more soft Indie folk rock. His frequently appearing female vocal also adds another side to his music, appealing to a wider audience. His music is meaningful and many audience members will relate to his music being quite universal, therefore a future will be apparent.
Fits into a combination genres. Mainly indie folk, however it is considered when listening, this is an acoustic feeling chilled soundtrack. He listened to a broad range of music when younger, gaining him more of knowledge about music, but his influences that helped him mould his particular sound were the likes of Rufus Wainright, The Thrills, Leonard Cohen and Jeff Buckley. He loved their individual sound within a particular genre and was always adoring of their soul. N

ow an established soloist his main competitors in this broad genre, would be the likes of Coldplay, Jason Mraz, and Joshua Radin and Azure ray. All these artists and bands have an image of passion and devotion and originality about their music, they do not necessarily sing soulfully but they show it through their lyrics and treatment to their fans. They are concerned as well as they could be. The fact that he sings about all universal fears and feelings of love, in a soulful way that could act as a soundtrack to a relationship or place memories or set a scene and can hit a nerve or relate to anyone it brings a problem where to sell him to; his stories and poetical lyrics implicate him as a very well educated talented man however, he can be understood and be inspirational to the lower jictar scale. So his star image would be sold as original down to earth creative and true.

14th Floor Records looks after the releases in the UK, Europe and the Rest of the World (through Warner Music). Other acts that are signed with the label are the likes of Joshua Radin, Biffy cliffro, Milo, Sneaky Sound system and The Wombats.
Being an Indie group he will be dealt with well and really promoted well, treated well as an artist as an individual whereas being with a major they will be sold with the intension to sell you as more of a product, an item. 14th floor having fewer groups with them they have more time to get to know him therefore promoting his art.
Genres being undetermined nowadays it is hard to put a finger on where his music would appeal to. However his poetical lyrics with hidden frustration and love and passion can be related to anyone in a relationship or even not in a relationship, the rich the poor, and the in between. Females would find him attractive and men would find him inspirational, and both would find him an intimate voice of interpretation. However I think his true demographics in age, who would fully understand his art would be 17 to 40. His typical fan base lifestyle would characteristically be in creative, busy, commuting jobs. They like to see friends and like to show their personality through their rooms or flats and houses. They are thinkers and like to mull over their day to day business or relationships. However music is there to help them, in feelings situations or moods, they would listen to any music that would fit their mood, so it is quite a broad subject. When times can be chaotic, confusing complex, and just not simple, he can just chill you out. We could help sell our artist through other forms of media, as mobile phones and TVs are essential in this demographics life. I-trips or radio transmitters will also be popular as their I-pod or mp3 will shape and identify who they are as an individual.
Being an honest artist with creativity oozing from him, the imagery from him we would promote him on his CD cover or billboards, maybe in greyscale of him and his guitar, or him silhouetted on a park bench with the sun beaming haloing him, or simply him with doodles drawn around. Very simple effective and honest.
His music videos sell his love for music and his insight on life. They show to the audience that it’s not about glam it’s about them and the song and the experiences people have had. The difference between his videos and the rest of the same genre is that the relationship with him and the music not the visuals or the style.
He would likely to be exhibited in planes and hotels, some of his tracks would be exhibited on music channels however his music is less visual than most of the more popular genres such as rock or pop. The videos will promote his albums that are quite understated and portray him as more of an individual one you can relate to and as an artist.
Creating a time line for the video was extensive and hard work. With a detailed description of time and music entrances and words, it took over an hour and a half to perfect. Also creating the timeline, I recognized that there is one cello player, which created one more job for us to do, to find a cello player. I researched to find any cello players, to no success, so we are in the process of discussing the image of the cello player. We are more rapidly falling behind, so more effect needs to be put in.
For the story board we had to take into consideration many different composition rules. Different shots, angles, movements, lighting, a rule of thirds. For every frame the process started with numbering the box, adding detail with, stating whether it is placed in the exterior or interior. Described what the shot type and angle was and any description of movement in the frame whilst the shot was in progress. With the use of shading you portrayed the lighting, using the three point lighting convention. For the action of movement and detail for actors, a black arrow is used for movement in the screen whilst for the transition a white arrow would be used and written above the arrow would be mix, dissolve, wipe or cut. We are using the ITV rules, in that the mix would be like the addisive effect whilst dissolve would be from one side to the other.
Learning about composition rules, was fascinating that the placement of characters and motion of cameras can have a real dramatic effect towards the audience. With pleasant placing of the next shots to the direction of a character in the shot to give an impact on their nature.
Film space refers to the spatial dynamics inherent in the film frame. With specific movement and direction the images can become a powerful story element.
The screen direction is referred to in axis. X axis refers to the line that cuts the frame horizontally. Objects can run left to right or right to left on this axis. Y axis refers to the line that puts from the frame vertically, objects can move up or down the Y axis. The Z axis therefore refers to the axis that runs to the foreground from the back ground of the screen, and vise versa: depth of field.
A great example of this is from the very well known British film, ‘Strangers on a train’ 1951, Alfred Hitchcock. From the very start we know exactly who is the good guy and who is the bad, subconsciously, however studying media, it is hard not to analyse a film anymore without being conscious to intricate details of direction.
By using this great technique, we wanted to portray our artist as loyal and positive qualities about him, create a sense of him being humble, therefore in our storyboard we have placed him on the left had side of the shot, and added a small detail of the camera angle being slightly higher than level to subliminally say he is humble.
We have also discussed the style of our character and the colour pallet. With a base monotone background and surroundings colour is important to get right without. By using simple colours like blue to create and white to give a sense of honesty and energy but also a sense of withdrawn emotions they are good colours. Colours can really give an extra depth to a story.
When music videos started to become big, around mid eighties, simple rules such as leading the eye, was really effective. It is just pleasant to watch and quite simply easy to read. A really good example of this is the ‘KANE GANG’ video where every shot finishes with the beginning shot starting where the last shot finishes. Such as a girl walking left to right and then a wipe action starts the shot with a hand playing the guitar where the girl had stopped.
